Whenever I go back to Tuscany (which I do every chance I get), I head for the outskirts of Montepulciano, first to pay respects to the great Sangallo church of San Biagio, then across the cypress-lined alley to La Grotta, a restaurant where, no matter what the season, I happily indulge in my favorite Tuscan sport—eating and drinking well. Savoring delicious food and wine in these comfortable surroundings (by the fire in wintertime, in the pretty garden in summer), relaxing in the care of Davide and his staff, so quietly attentive to every moment of the meal, is my idea of a perfect Tuscan experience.
